今回の個展を拝見し、中谷さんの平面作家としての面白さ、ユニークさをあらためて認識することができたように思えます。

VOCAに出品された作品や森岡書店での展示での人物を表現した作品をインスタレーションに挿入することを控え、羽ばたく鳥の姿をさまざまな瞬間で描写したモチーフで統一することで展示空間に強靭な一貫性が導き出されているることに加え、人物の表情などが醸し出す濃い情緒や叙情性は抑えられていて、そのことが中谷さんの仕事自体の輪郭がより立ち上がっているような印象です。
石膏による分厚い盤に鳥の姿が彫り込まれ、そこに透明樹脂を流し込んで表層に平滑性を引き出し、平面としての構造が成り立っている作品。実際に拝見すると、丁寧に施される凹みでの表現のユニークさにまず意識が向かいます。鳥が羽ばたいているその姿は立体的に思い描いてみると眼前にあるものとは実際とは逆で構造上むしろ出るべきところが引っ込んでいるという、写真のネガとポジの関係性と似た状況が、さらにそれよりももっと強い裏返り感で提示されて、作品を目にしてそこから光景を想像する過程が複雑で遠回りになることで、そこに得難い新鮮な重厚さが溢れます。

石膏という素材の重さから開放するようにそれぞれの作品は比較的高い位置に設置され、また空間自体のシャープな白さが石膏作品に一貫して潜むどこか古めかしい感じ、悠久の風合いと調和しておおらかさと優しさで展示空間を満たします。その中央に浮かぶ一艘の舟は濃厚な緑と細かなテクスチャーで覆われているにもかかわらず鈍重になることはなく、中谷さんが続けて紡いでこられたやわらかな神々しい世界観を、これを配することでしっかりと、自然に継いでいるように思えるのも印象的です。

僕が2011年に拝見した展覧会の中でもっとも良かったのがこの内海聖史さんの個展です。一ヶ月に渡るひとつの会期を4つに分け、週ごとにインスタレーションを替えていくという大胆なプランに加え、void+のふたつのスペースをそれぞれの週で対比・呼応させることでそれぞれの展示の見え方を立体的に捕らえることを可能にしていたことにも大いに唸らされた次第です。
しかも、このとき展示された作品はすべてvoid+の応接スペースに全て倉庫然としておかれていたため、それぞれの展示は事前にややネタバレ感があったにも関わらず、実際に展示されたときに出来上がる空間のインパクトは充分に新鮮だったことにも感嘆。内海さんがvoid+のコンパクトなホワイトキューブについて再三仰っていた「どう展示しても良くなってしまう」ポテンシャルに頼ることなく、寧ろ今までにないかたちを創出することでその可能性をさらに引き出して、同時に内海さんのバイタリティもこの空間での展示によって拡張されたようにも思えます。

天井に絵画を展示した第1週、一角の三角のスペースにそのかたちの画面を嵌め込んだ第2週、これまでもさまざまなかたちで提示されてきた12色のパッケージを今回はそれぞれを1枚ごとに配する縦長の画面を繋げて並べた最終週、それぞれに視覚から得られる爽やかで深遠、そして思いがけない大胆さに寄る刺激が痛快だったのですが、僕自身も意外に感じているのがそのインスタレーションのなかでもっともインパクトを感じたのが星形の画面を奥の壁面にストレートに展示した第3週。画面の形状の奇抜さでいえば演出過多とも解釈できてしまうほどで、しかしあの空間に展示されてその空間に接した瞬間、物理的にはわずか数メートル、たったあれだけの奥行きがずいぶんと遠くに感じられるほどのダイナミズムがそこに導き出されていたことに心から感動させられました。

応接のスペースの奥の壁面に展示された作品はそれぞれ内海さんのペインティングそのものの臨場感が力強く引き出されていたように思えます。平面作品の展示としてはまったく奇を衒わない（しかし作品の高さなどは無論考え抜かれている）展示が作品とのプリミティブな対峙を提供し、色彩の美しさやそれらの画面上に置ける配置、さらに綿棒でひたすら置かれていくドットの、その縁の部分が繊細に立ち上がる生々しいマチエルとその凄まじい密集にも引き込まれ、初めてのシルバーの絵の具を貴重とした作品や最終週の画面比でこれまでの3倍の絵の具を乗せたという黒の作品の異様なまでの重厚さにはただただ圧倒されてしまった次第です。
